A lovely sunny day at the Lapstone playing fields saw Wyvern welcome St Francis for the latest league match. Unfortunately due to injuries and unavailability our opposition were only able to field 8 players today instead of the usual 9, so full credit has to go to them for coming along and not giving up until the final whistle, they can certainly be very proud of their efforts.

Wyvern started the game strongly, and tested the excellent St Francis goalkeeper early, although he was up to the task and made two or three fantastic saves. Wyvern kept pressing though, and were rewarded when Fin scored with a lovely effort from just inside the box.

With the Wyvern defence of Arran, Fraser and Henry looking solid at the back, and with Taylor communicating brilliantly from the goal, the team was able to snuff out any danger, as well as starting attacks from the back. They were excellently supported by Tom who was on winning the ball back in midfield on a regular basis.

On the 10 minute mark Charlie slid the ball through to Hayden, and he went on one of his trademark mazy dribbles before finishing nicely, and 5 minutes later it was Hayden again after a lovely pass by Evan who had just come on. Charlie grabbed one for himself towards the end of the half before St Francis railed to get themselves a goal after a bit of a mixup at the back for Wyvern.Any concerns about a comeback were quickly dismissed though as Hayden wrapped things up for first half just before half-time to make it 5-1 at the break.

Into the second half and the substitutions made we are starting to have an effect. Evan moved back to the right side of defence, from where his long passes were a threat as he linked up with Ollie, who looked continually dangerous having switched flanks. Leon was offering his customary calmness in the middle of the pitch, Toby slotted into centre back and lead the defence excellently from there, while Leighton came onto the left and was looking dangerous at the far post from crosses.

After 35 minutes Ollie came close with a lovely free kick, before Fin grabbed his second of the day after a breakaway. Midway through the half, Hayden added his fourth, before Charlie was brought down and stepped up to convert the penalty himself, showing great character after missing from the spot last week.

The defence was still holding firm and playing brilliantly, not just defensively but maintaining possession confidently at the back, and starting attacks with incisive through balls, while Taylor was coming off his line to claim the ball and starting dangerous breaks with his long throws. Henry's long passing was proving a constant threat and Arran was whipping in dangerous crosses. With 5 minutes to go St Francis got their second of the day on the break, however Wyvern had the last word when Ollie got a well deserved goal, rifling it into the corner.

Again, huge credit had to go to the St Francis team for keeping going right to the end, and special mention to their two goalkeepers who were both fantastic, but as the Wyvern team were told, you can only beat who is in front of you, and despite having that advantage they were clinical and played lovely football throughout the match.

Next up is a trip to Wellow, a team that are always tough to play against, but Wyvern will be hoping to maintain their strong run of form.
